How to DJ

Divided into three levels, our “How to DJ” courses will guide you from beginner to advanced, teaching you everything you need to know to start DJing for fun or professionally.

Level One

Is it for me?
This is a course for complete beginners, so no experience is necessary. If you've never DJed before, or have dabbled a little and want to know more, this is the best place to start.

What will I learn?

Equipment
In this course, you will be introduced to all the equipment a DJ needs; CD decks, vinyl turntables and DJ mixers. We'll show you how they work and give you have the chance to become familiar and comfortable with them.

Beat Mixing
Our tutors will then introduce you to beat mixing – why it is so important and how to go about it.

Preparing a set
We'll give you guidance on how to select the best songs for your DJ set.

By the end of the two-day course, you will have created a mix of tracks which will be recorded onto CD for you to take away and start showing off!

Level Two

Is it for me?
How to DJ Level 2 is designed for anyone who has grasped the basics of DJing and wants to start getting themselves heard and DJing live.

What will I learn?

Equipment
You will be introduced to EQs and on-board mixer effects. We'll also show you how to add acapellas into your set.

Recording
We'll teach you how to master your mix and duplicate your CDs. We'll also show you the best ways of uploading and sharing your music with the internet.

Live DJing
We'll give you advice on how to go about getting gigs and promoting yourself. Our professional tutors will also show you how to put on a show, how to add energy to a set and work with the crowd.

Level Three

Is it for me?
The final part of our How to DJ course will prepare you to DJ at a professional level. It is best suited to anyone who already has experience of mixing and using DJ equipment, but wants to learn more advanced techniques to separate themselves from the crowd.

What will I learn?

Digital DJing
You'll be shown how to use the most modern technology in DJing, including software like Traktor, Ableton and Serato.

Techniques
We'll introduce you to advanced techniques like;

  • Scratching
  • Adding samples to your mixes
  • Three and four deck mixing
  • Remixing and editing
  • Bootlegging mixes to add into your DJ set


Live Djing
We'll show you how to incorporate Ableton software into your live performance and how to use it to add VST (virtual instruments).

Visuals
Finally, we'll show you how to make a video mini-mix that you can use to promote your mixes on sites like YouTube.

Scratch DJing

Is it for me?
Don't know your flares from your crabs? Get signed up for our Scratch DJing course for a fast and furious guide to using your turntable as an instrument! The course is led by Sonic’s resident turntablists and covers all you need to know, scratch-wise: cutting, baby scratches, jamming on multiple decks, and beyond.
 

What will I learn?

Live demonstration
See, right up close and personal, exactly what goes into a Scratch DJing performance, as demonstrated by our professional trainer.

Choosing tunes
We’ll start with tips on what samples and sounds work the best for the scratching style, and how to decide what tracks fit together to cut into your mix.

Scratch techniques
There are a ton of techniques to beef up your scratch credentials, and we’ll teach you how to pull off baby scratches, fades, shivers, and more.

Cross-fading
You’ll come away with full knowledge of how to cut with the fader and apply the scratches you’ve learned.

CDJ skills
Add the CDJ to the mix and we’ll teach you how to add flare to your scratches with the cue, loop and pitch controls.

Live session
A class-wide jam session, linking multiple decks and giving everyone a chance to test out their new techniques. We’ll make a recording of the mix too.
