Is it for me?
This is the ideal course for anyone wanting to get to DJ with the software that everyone is talking about! You’ll get a feel for software, and put it to use crafting, mixing and adding effects to your own DJ set. DJing with Ableton Live finishes with live student performances, teaching you how to improvise remixing and record your sets.
What will I learn?
Preparing
Get your audio and MIDI into line for a live set. You’ll learn how to import audio and get some guidance on warping and looping techniques. Sonic’s pro trainer will also show you how to create MIDI loops and patterns to trigger instruments.
Ableton instruments
You’ll find out how to use Simpler and Impulse to create instrumental patterns for your live set.
Ableton effects
Learn about Ableton’s diverse array of effects such as filter, delay, reverb and vocoder.
MIDI controllers
We'll show you how to assign MIDI sequences and set up your MIDI controller.
DJing with Ableton
This is the heart of the course. You’ll get a first-hand try at mixing full tracks and adding samples and effects.
Performing and recording
Students put together their sets, perform them live, and practice remixing on the fly. You’ll be able to record your mix as an audio file too and take it away with you.

The course is led by Sonic’s resident turntablists and covers all you need to know about scratching: cutting, baby scratches, jamming on multiple decks, and beyond.
What will I learn?
Live demonstration
See, right up close and personal, exactly what goes into a Scratch DJing performance, as demonstrated by our professional trainer.
Choosing tunes
We’ll start with tips on what samples and sounds work best for the scratching style, and how to decide which tracks fit together so you can cut them into your mix.
Scratch techniques
There are a ton of techniques to beef up your scratch credentials, and we’ll teach you how to pull off baby scratches, fades, shivers, and more.
Cross-fading
You’ll come away with full knowledge of how to cut with the fader and apply the scratches you’ve learned.
CDJ skills
Add the CDJ to the mix and we’ll teach you how to add flare to your scratches with the cue, loop and pitch controls.
Live session
The course will culminate in a class-wide jam session, linking multiple decks and giving everyone a chance to test out their new techniques. We’ll make a recording of the mix too.
