What is House Music?

House is a music genre characterized by a repetitive four-on-the-floor beat and a typical tempo of 120 beats per minute.

It was created by DJs and music producers from Chicago's underground club culture in the early/mid-1980s, and as DJs began altering disco songs to give them a more mechanical beat.

Key Features of House Music

The main features of a house track can be broken down into the following areas and are the real differentiators when it comes to House music

Tempo

Typically 120 - 130 BPM

4/4 Beat

Often features a standard 4/4 beat, commonly referred to as the "four on the floor" rhythm. This means there is a kick drum hit on every beat.

Repetitive Rhythmic Structure

House music is known for its repetitive loops and sequences.

Basslines

The basslines in House music are rhythmic and sometimes melodic. They play a crucial role in giving the track its groove.

Synthesizers

House tracks often employ atmospheric and lush synthesizers, especially for pads and lead melodies.

Vocals

While not always present, many House tracks include vocals. These can range from full lyrical verses and choruses to shorter, repeated phrases or hooks. Sometimes vocals are sampled from other songs and then looped or processed.

Instrumentation

House music occasionally incorporates real instruments, such as pianos, saxophones, or guitars, giving some tracks a more organic feel.

Sampling

House music, especially in its early days, made extensive use of samples. These could be snippets from other songs, vocal phrases, or other sounds. Sampling technology played a significant role in the evolution of House music.

Intermediate & Advanced House Tutorials

Take the next step in these not so basic House tutorials as we dive a little deeper into production techniques. You’ll need to be competent in your DAW before tackling these.
